About Us

ABOUT BRISTOL STEPPIN SISTAS
Founder – Sophia Brown

We are a walking group established in Bristol in April 2021 to enable us to reach out to local women in the Bristol area to encourage an interest in walking and thriving in open spaces. We are a grassroots group of black women and women of colour who are passionate about walking and enthusing who identify with our lived experience to do so.

We regularly organise walks, for those who wish to take short walks and for those who wish to take longer treks.
The aim is to help motivate women of colour to visit places they would not have ventured to including rural areas around Bristol and further afield in the south west, routes that can get women around the city and beyond, routes that stoke interest and wonder.

Why we do it: There has been a reluctance for women of colour to venture in unfamiliar spaces where they feel exposed, judged, and remarked on. This has led to our staying in our lanes.

We want to encourage women to step across these boundaries and push their limits, to do this in the safety and company of others who share similar experiences of discrimination and disadvantage.

We want to enable the activity of walking to be uplifting and enriching to the lives of women of colour of all abilities, to present walking as opportunities to engage in conversation, creative reflection, enjoyment of nature, appreciation of new environments and fundamentally to help address issues of mental health which have been prevalently on the increase

When we meet, we walk and talk and enjoy the surrounding vibes of nature. We share ideas on the different cultures, foods, holiday spots, community groups ect.
We sometimes finish the walk off going to a country pub for lunch. I have just started arranging get together events for the summer months for us all to enjoy.
Recently we have raised money through crowdfunder, so I have managed to buy tshirts, water bottles and pay for travel fares as we travel by public transport to reach rural areas.
Also, I have provided First Aid outdoor training for 24 women, and we all passed
And walk leader training for 6 women - Which we are all now qualified Level 3 Lowland Walk Leaders
